Parkland’s C.V. Roman Health Center

Imagine having to choose between going to the doctor or paying your electric bill. Imagine trying to navigate multiple transit schedules to reach a clinic as you are doubled-over in pain. Imagine knowing you are at risk for a life-threating disease but unsure of where to turn for help.

These are realities for too many in our community, especially in vulnerable communities within southern Dallas County. That’s why Parkland built the C.V. Roman Health Center, located in the award-winning Reimagine RedBird development, as part of its plan to increase access to healthcare services.

The Facts

  • Every day 246 people move to Dallas County. As our population grows, we are seeing a disproportionate increase in growth among the most vulnerable.
  • 750 patients seek care in Parkland’s ED each day, making it the busiest emergency room in the U.S.
  • Many households in southern Dallas County are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level and Parkland is their only option for care.
  • Diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and some cancers impact African-American communities at higher rates.

The Reality

Access to care has not kept pace with this growth and sick residents are relying on Parkland’s already crowded emergency department to receive care. Southern Dallas County is a vulnerable community where many residents can’t access the care they need to get healthy and stay healthy.

Currently, a high percentage of patients from these ZIP codes:

  • come to Parkland’s ED for basic primary care,
  • need specialized care to manage their diabetes and associated complications such as foot ulcers, and
  • require life-saving cancer treatment at later stages because they did not have access to screenings and early intervention.

Barriers such as lack of transportation, complicated or inflexible work schedules, a need for child care and more are also preventing them from accessing care earlier. Residents in southern Dallas County deserve quality care and the continuity of care that is found in a medical home.

The Solution

Parkland is now providing care close to home by opening a new health center in the Reimagine RedBird development site. Reimagine RedBird is a mixed-use development initiative where Parkland will provide the following services:

  • Adult and geriatric primary care
  • Specialty care for women
  • Today Clinic for walk-in appointments
  • Pharmacy
  • Behavioral health for all ages
  • Breast cancer screenings
  • Pathology
  • Radiology
  • Social work
  • Nutrition
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • Patient Financial Services

The health center also includes the technology needed to provide virtual methods of care such as telehealth, e-consults and virtual shared medical appointments. Projections indicate the health center, once fully staffed, will provide 40,000 preventive and primary care visits each year and 23,000 women’s specialty health visits each year for people who reside in southern Dallas County, including Duncanville, DeSoto and Cedar Hill.

You Can Help!

Providing our most vulnerable neighbors access to the care they need is critical. But we can’t do it alone; we need your help. You have the opportunity to provide patients access to immunizations, cancer screenings, nutrition counseling, prenatal care and so many other life-saving services that are provided in the new C.V. Roman Health Center.

Please consider making a gift to ensure the new C.V. Roman Health Center can provide the quality, compassionate care that everyone deserves. Recognition opportunities are available for gifts of $5,000 or more.
