Parkland Health Foundation is expanding its capacity to support children and families in Dallas County thanks to a new grant from the Roots & Wings Foundation. Families who are low-income and uninsured often face significant challenges accessing affordable healthcare. And for at-risk women in the community, gaps in reproductive health services, mental health support, and preventive care contribute to poor health outcomes.
These disparities demonstrate the need for improved infrastructure and resources designed to meet the needs of Dallas County families. With the support of a three-year $1.9 million grant from the Roots & Wings Foundation, Parkland is expanding its health initiatives to provide accessible care for all.
“This investment will help grow our existing programs and develop innovative solutions to support women and children,” said Michael Horne, EdD, MPP, president and CEO, Parkland Health Foundation. “As the only public safety-net hospital in Dallas County, Parkland is committed to ensuring that every member of the community, regardless of socioeconomic status, has access to affordable, high-quality care when and where they need it.”
Through its family planning program, Parkland seeks to reduce the number of unwanted and teen pregnancies while educating women and girls about sexual health so they can take control of their futures. Parkland is currently working to increase the number of patients receiving family planning education and services, reducing wait time for reproductive healthcare appointments and reaching more teens.
Through its women’s health program, Parkland is further developing its Extending Maternal Care After Pregnancy program (eMCAP), which addresses the critical need for maternal care services after the Medicaid coverage period ends by providing new mothers with postpartum care.
