Virtual care options have seen an uptick in popularity since COVID-19 mandated social distancing as a means to stay safe. Parkland provides telehealth appointments with its Parkland Connect program, allowing patients to connect with a provider from any location using any mobile device or computer.
Across the health system, providers are using technology to connect with patients seeking services ranging from routine preventive care visits to behavioral health appointments.
“Some patients were anxious about coming to the clinic when the pandemic began and were relieved to learn we would be able to service them virtually,” said Dr. Rebecca Corona, Parkland’s behavioral health team leader. “Some prefer phone calls to the video calls but we’ve seen an overwhelmingly positive response because their goal is the same as ours – access.”
As the Dallas County’s public health system, Parkland patients often face unique barriers when seeking care. Work schedules and lack of transportation or childcare often cause patients to choose between their needs and the needs of their families.
“Allowing patients to make an online appointment themselves according to their own schedule gives them autonomy,” explained Dr. Nosheen Shah, primary care provider for Parkland Connect. “The issues many face when trying to attend a physical appointment are alleviated with the telehealth option.”
While Parkland’s behavioral health department has seen an increase in referrals since the pandemic began, telehealth has even allowed providers to be more flexible in their scheduling.
“We are able to reach and support those who may just need someone to talk to as they process everything we are experiencing during this time,” said Dr. Corona. “Our clinics are wonderful but as our patient population continues to grow and additional services are needed. Telehealth provides us with an opportunity to maintain a therapeutic relationship and help us address the needs of our patients. We currently aren’t able to support every location with their own designated behavioral health specialist but the option to connect with someone who needs help is available with telehealth.”
